Manufactures include machine tools, electric motors, glass, leather goods, bricks, wood products, paper, and processed food. The touristic half-timbered town of Wernigerode is situated at the northeastern edge of the Harz Mountains, at the foot of the Brocken ( m), the highest peak in Central Germany. Former seat of the Principality of Stolberg-Wernigerode, the town is dominated by the romantic Wernigerode Castle, one of the most visited in Germany.
